Although activity in the building industry in Europe remains relatively stable, in the midst of the global economic crisis, Hydro has made adjustments in its aluminium building systems operations that will result in annualized cost savings of more than EUR 5 million.

Hydro's underlying EBIT was NOK 868 million in the fourth quarter, including inventory write-downs of about NOK 700 million. Underlying EBIT amounted to NOK 1,490 million in the third quarter and 1,699 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. Hydro's results for the quarter reflect the ongoing financial crisis, which has led to a dramatic drop in aluminium prices as a result of a sharp fall in global demand.

Sør-Norge Aluminium AS (Søral), owned 49.9 percent by Hydro, will reduce its aluminium production by another 25 percent, resulting in a total reduction of 50 percent at the smelter at Husnes, Norway.
